Sew with Alice: Capes

Capes are a quick, fun project that instantly elevate costumes—from vampires to superheroes and everything in between. Join Alice Hawes for an evening of sewing as she teaches you simple, effective methods to create a half circle cape, with the option to add a hood or collar.

Alice is a professional costume maker for opera, theatre, film, and TV. You may have seen her work with Pacific Opera Victoria, Belfry Theatre, or on RuPaul’s Drag Race. She loves passing on her passion for sewing and costume making through teaching.

Come with an idea for a character, and Alice will help you make a cape that’s just right for you.

In This One-Off Class You Will

• Create a half circle cape sized to your preference
• Choose to add a hood or collar
• Learn quick measuring techniques using a pin and string
• Learn how to gather or pleat for fullness
• Learn how to neatly finish a curved hem

Skill Level

Advanced Beginner – Intermediate · Ages 16+

Skill Requirements

Students must be able to:

• Cut fabric using a pattern
• Thread and use a sewing machine
• Wind a bobbin
• Sew simple seams
• Understand terms like straight of grain and seam allowance

What We Supply

• Sewing machine (if you are not bringing your own)
• Recirculated fabric OR option to purchase fabric of your choice
• Hood and collar patterns
• Instructions for drafting and cutting the cape

What You Bring

• 2 meters of 55” wide woven or fleece fabric
  (For a full-length adult cape, bring 4 meters)
• Fabric and supplies purchased in advance

We strongly recommend washing and drying your fabric the same way you plan to care for the finished garment to pre-shrink it. If you using any of our recirculated fabric, please come pick out your fabric well before the class so you can prep your fabric.
