Focusing on teaching you how to create this specific quilt block and the opportunity to pick a colour pallet of your own choice!
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
Skill requirements:
You will need to have sewn before, know how to confidently thread your machine and be familiar with most sewing lingo and rotary cutting. It is recommended to have completed an “Intro to Quilting” class or have quilted before and in recent enough time that you are still comfortable and familiar with quilting. These classes are for beginner quilters/sewists looking to continue and expand their skills with guidance or for those who are familiar with quilting and would like to create this pattern in a classroom/social setting.
Please note: depending on how fast you learn, you may have homework to complete between classes. If you don't have a sewing machine or cutting mat/rotary cutter at home, you can book Open Studio time with us to work on your project.
Ages 16+
In this workshop you will learn:
-
New sewing vocabulary
-
Proper cutting techniques
-
How to piece quilt blocks
-
How to construct the Quarter Square Quilt block
-
How to transform a quilt block into a pillowcase/ cover
-
Discuss how colour tones/values alter block appearances
What we provide:
We have quilting fabric in our recirculated collection to choose from. (You will want to come down to take a look prior to the class to see if the selection is to your taste) - If we do not have what you want in our recirculated collection we will have other quilting cottons for sale that will be 20% off for taking the class.
What You Provide:
-
Fabric: ** You will want to use quilting cotton ONLY.
We recommend using different colours that work well together or very distinct shades of the same colour. Any fabrics which are too similar in colour or value/tone will not likely display the block pattern well.
For the block itself you will need ( 5 colours total, finished size 18”);
-
Background colour - one fat quarter
-
Colour A, B, C & D - ¼ metre
per block and additionally;
-
Two fat quarters for the cushion cover back, or one fat quarter for the back of a tote bag.
-
A fat quarter of any light (or matching) fabric to back the quilt piece to stabilize our quilting. This piece will not be seen so it does not have to be pretty or patterned, however, it does need to be no darker than your lightest block colour so it does not show through the piece.
-
Optional batting, you do not have to actually “quilt” the pillow but it is an option, though it may take more time to do so.
Additional fabric is to be added around the block to size it to the pillow cover measurements to fit a larger pillow or to make a larger bag. If this is the case please purchase additional fabric to accommodate.
*All fabric measurements are approximate and all pillow measurements are finished sizes. Adding .5” to each finished pillow measurement would be the minimum addition to the cutting measurements to allow for seam allowance if you are scaling the pattern up to fit a larger cushion.
-
Sewing machine: Don't forget to pack the manual, foot pedal & power cord!
-
If you already have pins, a rotary cutter, cutting mat, and quilting ruler, it may be good to bring them as everyone will be sharing otherwise.
