Simple Alterations & Tailoring



Join us for this 3-week class in learning basic alteration techniques and fundamental tailoring principles, with a focus on understanding the difference between the two. By the end of the course, students will be able to confidently alter garments for a better fit and understand the core concepts of tailoring. This class includes different mending techniques.

Skill Level: Advanced beginner - Intermediate


Skill requirements:
 

A couple beginner level classes, such as 'Tote Bag for New Sewists', have sewn a several projects on your own PLUS some garment sewing experience. kKnowing how to thread and use a sewing machine, wind a bobbin, construct simple seams, and be familiar with sewing terminology such as "right sides of fabric together" and "seam allowance" is expected for this class.  

Must be aged 16+

Learning Outcomes:  (Not all outcomes below will be for everyone, it will depend on what each student brings) 


  • Distinguish between alterations and tailoring, understanding the purpose and scope of each, including when to alter versus when to tailor for better garment fit and function.

  • Identify and properly use basic sewing tools and equipment, including seam rippers, measuring tapes, pins, needles, hand-sewing supplies, and sewing machines.

  • Perform common clothing alterations on personal garments such as:

    • Hemming pants, tops, skirts, or dresses

    • Taking in or letting out seams for a better fit

    • Adjusting waistbands, sleeves, or side seams

  • Apply simple tailoring techniques to improve garment shape and structure, including:

    • Creating and sewing darts

    • Reshaping garments through seam manipulation

    • Making basic fit adjustments for body contouring

  • Use basic mending techniques to repair and extend the life of garments, including:

    • Patching holes or tears

    • Reinforcing seams

    • Hand-stitching small repairs

  • Analyze fit issues in ready-made garments and plan appropriate alteration or tailoring strategies to correct them.

  • Complete 2–3 self-chosen garment projects, applying learned skills to improve fit, function, or appearance.

  • Develop confidence in working independently on basic sewing repairs and adjustments, using both machine and hand-stitching methods.

  • 2-3 garments from home you want to alter, tailor and or mend
