Garment Block Pattern Making

Join us for a step-by-step entry level pattern drafting class. In the 2-day workshop you will learn to make a set of blocks in your personal measurements! A “block” is a master pattern with ease, darts, and necklines drawn in custom, they are usually in a thin cardboard for sturdiness and to trace out. You will take home step by step instructions for any blocks not drafted in workshop time.
Skill Level: Advanced beginner - Intermediate
Skill requirements: This workshop will be beneficial most to; Up-cyclers, people who regularly buy patterns, anyone with sewing experience. Haven sewn a few garments with a pattern will also be helpful for your learnign in this class.
Must be aged 16+
What you will be doing:
- Day 1 - will be taking measurements and beginning the draft, then creating a take-home pattern to cut out of muslin or any woven fabric. **You will be sewing your mock up at home for homework the week between day 1 and day 2. A old sheet from home work for this.
- Day 2 - you will learn how to adjust your muslin and transfer to your draft. Then transferring you draft to a cardstock “block”.
Learning Outcomes:
1. How to Take Measurements:
You’ll learn how to take proper body measurements using a measuring tape for yourself or a client.
2. How to draft a block:
You will start with any of the following blocks: Women’s Long Bodice, Women’s Skirt, Unisex Pants, Men’s Bodice. From there the Bodice Block can be altered further to the Fitted Bodice Block, Torso Block, or Casual Shirt Block, as well as the Sleeve Block can be drafted! These are all in the take home instructions, or you can come back for 1 on 1 help.
3. How to Correctly use Drafting Rulers:
You will learn how to accurately use pattern drafting rulers such as the French curve, hip curve, and square rulers.
4. How to Transfer Block Draft to a Sewing Pattern:
You will learn how to properly use tracing paper to create a pattern with seam allowance, grainlines, and fold lines. There will be a week break for the students to sew a muslin “mock-up”. This will require anywhere from ½ yard to 2 yards depending on what block or how many you get done in class 1.
5. How to Make Alterations to the Mock-Up:
Learn how to tell where the mock-up needs to be taken in, and how to transfer that to your draft.
6. How to Transfer Draft to Cardstock:
The final step of the workshop is transferring your block draft onto cardstock using an Awl. Then you will cut out and holepunch! You can now easily trace out your block and create anything!
What to Bring:
• Measuring Tape in Inches.
• Pencils and eraser
• Black and red fine tip markers
• Ruler with inches: Ideally a clear grid ruler.

Instructor Bio: | Stephanie Mould is a 23 year old Fashion designer and Pattern Drafting Instructor from Duncan BC. Stephanie is very passionate about sustainability in the fashion industry, which lead her to find her passion in teaching pattern drafting. She currently teaches at Pacific Design Academy in the fashion department where she graduated in 2022. Her clothing brand, Smouldy, has been featured in Vouge Italia, Mexico, and Cosmopolitan Japan; and has been featured in runways in Vancouver, Calgary, and later this year Cannes, France and Seattle, USA. |
