Underwear Making: From Fabric to Fit



This 2-week class teaches students how to make their own custom underwear using provided recirculated knit fabric, with an emphasis on sustainability, fit, and creativity. This class will show you how to use your leftover knit fabrics bits to make underwear, so you are not wasting that pieces you are not sure what to do with.

Skill Level:
 Advanced Beginner - Intermediate

Skill Requirements:

  • Advanced Beginner classes plus several completed items.
  • Experience successfully completing several sewing projects. This class will not cover basic sewing machine operations such as threading a needle, switching needles, how to adjust stitch length, locking stitches, reverse stitching, pivoting corners, winding bobbins etc. Students should be capable of performing these procedures without assistance.
  • For apparel making classes: you must have familiarity with using a sewing pattern, measuring oneself and picking a size.

For students age 16+


Learning outcomes:

  • Choose the correct size for your pattern
  • How you can use left over fabric from other knit projects to make underwear
  • How knit fabrics work 
  • Sewing knits with elastic and proper techniques
  • How to fit your underwear while making them
  • Learn the burrito method for gusset insertion
  • How to sew your underwear on a regular machine and a serger
  • Finishing techniques

What we provide: 
  • Recirculated fabric (from our stash - you are more than welcome to bring your own from home) 
  • Serger (if you do not have your own)
  • Elastic for practice sewing 
What you Bring:
  • 4 way stretch knit fabric from your stash (no less than 4"x 4") - bamboo blend or cotton knit is recommend, but if you plan to use stretch lace be aware it is tricky to work with. 
  • Elastic for your finished underwear *
  • Pattern of choice ** 
* You will want to get soft lingerie elastic, such as: picot, scallop, fold over or soft waistband for trunk style underwear 

** There are lots of patterns to choose from. Some of the pattern lines we like are Jalie, Waredrobe by me, Closet Core, any of the big 4 patterns (McCall's, Simplicity, Vogue, New Look) and there are plenty of free online patterns to choose from.
