Sewing Knit Garments



Have you tried sewing with knits and didn't have much success? Do you want to further your skills in garment making? This class is for you! We will explore the wonderful world of sewing with knits and how working with knit fabric is different than woven fabric, while learning the skills necessary to have success with making knit garments. 

Skill Level: Intermediate

Skill requirements:

Have sewn a few garments projects on your own, know how to read a pattern and understand size chart PLUS basic sewing experience (knowing how to thread and use a sewing machine, wind a bobbin, construct simple seams, and be familiar with sewing terminology such as "right sides of fabric together" and "seam allowance"). 

Must be aged 16+

You will learn:

  • Fundamentals of knit fabric
  • Understanding of reduced ease in knit patterns
  • Proper marking
  • Working with a serger/regular machine for seams
  • Proper finishing for knits garments
  • Learn how to use a cover stitch machine/ twin needle application for hems and finishing
  • Learn a fit as you go method for knit garments 

We supply:

  • Recirculated Pattern (knit) - Supply is variable, so come look well before the first day of class
  • Recirculated Fabric (knit fabric appropriate for knit pattern of choice) - Supply is variable, so come well before the first day of class
  • Machine if you are not bringing your own (If you have a serger, we recommend you bring this with your regular machine) 
**IF YOU ARE BRINGING YOUR OWN FABRIC AND PATTERN FROM HOME, PLEASE CONTACT US TO DISCUSS SUITABILITY OF FABRIC AND PATTERN FOR THIS CLASS**


You bring:

  • Thread
  • Any other notions noted on your pattern (e.g. elastic, buttons, etc.)
  • Pattern, if you are not choosing from us
  • Fabric, if you are not choosing from us 

***Please buy/pick out your fabric and supplies in advance. We strongly recommend you wash and dry your fabric in the same way that you will wash and dry your garment to pre-shrink your fabric. ***
