Sewing Starter: Square Block Quilting

A 4-week class all about starting your quilting journey on a manageable scale with Heather! By the end of class, you will complete a beautiful baby size quilt or four quilted place mats.

Focusing on teaching you the basics of quilting you will get the opportunity to create your own simple quilt by arranging your fabric squares in a way that is simple and fun!

Ages 16+ 

In this workshop you will learn:

• New sewing vocabulary

• How to thread and operate your machine

• Fabric grainlines

• The properties of quilting cotton

• Proper cutting techniques

• How to piece quilt blocks

• How to assemble a quilt "sandwich"

• How to quilt the pieced top, batting, and backing

• How to bind your quilt or place mats

What You BRING:

• Sewing machine: Don't forget to pack the manual, foot pedal & power cord. * IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A MACHINE WE WILL PROVIDE ONE FOR YOU. 

• If you already have pins, scissors, a rotary cutter, cutting mat, and quilting ruler, it may be good to bring them as everyone will be sharing otherwise.

Baby size quilt (36" x 45" approx): 

• Fabric: ** You will want to use quilting cotton ONLY 

• Quilt top = 1.5 m total (you can get 6-8 different fabrics totalling to 1.5m) 

• Quilt back = 1.5 m 

• Quilt batting (100% cotton) = 1.5 m or a Throw size package of batting) 

• Binding = .5 m 

OR

Four quilted place mats (17" X 13" each approx) 

• Mat Backing = .75 m 

• Mat top = 1 m total (3-6 different fabrics to total to 1m) 

• Quilt batting = .75 m 

• Binding = .5 m or 2 packages of extra wide double fold bias tape
