'Sweet Seams Are Made of These:' Intro to Garment Making



Please note all classes after March 1st will be held at 2950 Douglas St #400, Victoria, BC.

Have you sewn before but want to venture into garment making? 

This is a 4 week advanced beginner sewing course that will help get you started. This class will help to cement what you learn with repetition over the 4 weeks that will open new doors to making your own clothes!

You will have the opportunity to make one garment with woven (not-stretchy) fabric in this class. 

Skill Level: Advanced beginner 

Skill requirements:

A couple beginner level classes, such as 'Tote Bag for New Sewists', have sewn a several projects on your own PLUS basic sewing experience (knowing how to thread and use a sewing machine, wind a bobbin, construct simple seams, and be familiar with sewing terminology such as "right sides of fabric together" and "seam allowance"). 

Must be aged 16+

You will learn:

  • Basic fabric knowledge for garment making
  • How to read and work with garment patterns
  • Proper body measurements
  • Marking & sewing darts
  • Seam finishing
  • Hemming
  • Applying bias binding and facing

We supply:

  • Recirculated Pattern (Woven)
  • Recirculated Fabric (Woven, such as quilting cotton - do not use silk, chiffon or other slippery wovens)
  • Machine if you are not bringing your own 
**IF YOU ARE BRINGING YOUR OWN FABRIC AND PATTERN FROM HOME, PLEASE CONTACT US TO DISCUSS SUITABILITY OF FABRIC AND PATTERN FOR THIS CLASS**

You bring:

  • Thread
  • Any other notions noted on your pattern (e.g. elastic, buttons, etc.)

***Please buy/pick out your fabric and supplies in advance. We strongly recommend you wash and dry your fabric in the same way that you will wash and dry your garment to pre-shrink your fabric. ***

Skill Level: Intermediate
Skill Details: Advanced Beginner - Intermediate (This class is specific for Advanced Beginner sewsits who want to get into garment making. Basic skills and knowledge of machine usage is necessary)
Materials Included: ALL MATERIALS AND PATTERN ARE INCLUDED
Requirements: **PLEASE COME TO THE FIRST CLASS WITH YOUR PATTERN AND FABRIC (PRE-WASHED). - If you are not sure what to choose as your project you can contact us for suitability requirements.
Instructor: Tanya King
Instructor Bio: Tanya is formally trained in fashion design and technology with extensive and professionally trained sewing experience of over 25 years & over 15 years of teaching experience, Her background includes custom design, alterations, styling, custom fitting, teaching and more. For the last 8 years she has focused on teaching and building a strong local sewing community with other sewists and enthusiasts.
