Quilted Jacket



Over 5 weeks, you will be build your quilting and garment making skills to make a stylish and much coveted quilted jacket. 

Your skilled teachers for this class are Bizz, a highly skilled quilter, and garment extraordinaire, Tanya. 


*** Please note that the first class will be used to design your jacket! Please bring any ideas and fabric you might like to use but don't sweat it if you're unsure where to start! Bizz and Tanya will both be present at the first class to make sure you are prepared for the rest of the course! ***


Skill Level: 
Intermediate

Skill Requirements:

  • Advanced Beginner classes plus a couple completed quilts and woven garments or equivalent
  • This class will not cover basic sewing machine operations such as threading a needle, switching needles, how to adjust stitch length, locking stitches, reverse stitching, pivoting corners, winding bobbins etc. Students should be capable of performing these procedures without assistance.
  • You must have familiarity with using a sewing pattern, measuring oneself and picking a size.


Prerequisite: 

Tote Bag for New Sewists, Sweet seams are made of these: Intro to Garment Making, other Advanced Beginner classes and/or sewed several projects on your own including a few garments. 

Ages 16+

Group size: Maximum 6 guests to keep our classes cozy and fun!

  •  How to adapt quilt(s) to a garment pattern
  •  Review Colour theory and fabric selection
  •  Review Reading Patterns – both quilt and garment
  •  Review Cutting Technique
  •  Making a Muslin
  •  Piecing - Quilt Top assembly
  •  Review of Pressing tips and technique
  •  Quilting options
  •  Bagging a Lining
  •  Binding and quilt labels

What you provide:

Fabric: 

You will be required to purchase *fabric, batting and thread for your quilted jacket. Materials will be discussed at the first session. You are welcome to bring any fabrics that you would like to use from home.

**Recirculated quilting cotton from our selection is included in the class  if you wish to have- you will want to come before the class to see if what we have is what you prefer. 

We offer a 20% student discount on all your supplies for this workshop! 

Pattern: 

We will be using the Hovea Jacket by Megan Nielsen. You can purchase the printed or PDF pattern here.


Machine:

We highly recommend you bring your own machine with the following: 

  • Walking foot
  • 1/4" foot 
  • Quilting needles 
  • Universal 90/14 needles 

**Please look at the pattern for fabric amounts for your sizing. We recommend you have your size worked out prior to the class, but if you need assistance with this and want/need to do pattern changes, this can be discuss in the first class.
