Tote Bag for New Sewists

For students age 16+. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns!
Please arrive to class early to select your materials. We recommend visiting the shop before the day of class, or at least 20 minutes early.

PLEASE NOTE TWO-SESSION CLASS:

Begin your project on day 1, creating pieced panels for your tote-to-be. Return on day 2 to assemble your tote bag.

Never sewn with a sewing machine? Maybe you have one, but aren't very comfortable with it yet? This class is a great way to get familiar with a sewing machine. The tote bag is very forgiving, so it makes a great first project.

In this class, you will learn:

  • Threading your machine (if you don't have one, don't worry. We have plenty to choose from! Please phone ahead to reserve a machine for in-class use)
  • Using a rotary cutter, ruler, and mat to cut fabric
  • Seam allowances
  • Pressing
  • Basic application of sewing with a machine
  • How to make a lined tote bag

No materials are needed for this class, as everything is included, but if you have your own:
  • Fabric (Nothing stretchy or slippery. If you aren't sure, we have plenty!)
  • Rotary cutter
  • Cutting ruler
  • Cutting mat
  • Sewing machine in good working order with a fresh needle
  • Thread
  • Pressing mat and iron
  • Fabric scissors
  • Hand-sewing needles
  • Any other standard notions such as straight pins, stitch ripper, etc.

Instructor: Jeanine Hartman
Instructor Bio: B.Sc. B.F.A. B.Ed During high school in Holland, Jeanine got her first sewing machine, a hand-cranked Singer once owned by her great-grandmother. She was always doing some kind of fibre art. This led her to NSCAD where she combined printmaking with fabric and made quilts from the prints. As a high art school teacher in New Brunswick, she instilled the love of creativity in many of her students. When she retired to Victoria, she took sewing classes at the Makehouse to upgrade her sewing skills. Not long ago she fell in love with a Bernina 335, which is now her steadfast companion in many fibre adventures.
