Class Overview

This two-session beginner class is designed for anyone who has never sewn before, has a sewing machine they feel unsure about, or wants a supportive introduction to machine sewing.

You will create a practical, fully lined tote bag while learning foundational sewing skills you can confidently apply to future projects.

• Session 1: Design and piece fabric panels for your tote

• Session 2: Assemble, line, and finish your tote bag

The tote project is very forgiving, making it an ideal first project while still teaching essential sewing techniques.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this class, you will understand:

• How to thread and properly set up a sewing machine

• Safe and accurate use of a rotary cutter, ruler, and mat

• How to measure, cut, and sew with correct seam allowances

• Proper pressing techniques that improve sewing results

• Basic sewing machine control and stitching skills

• How to construct and assemble a fully lined tote bag

Sewing Machines

You are welcome to bring your own sewing machine if you have one.

No machine? No problem! We have classroom machines available.
Please call ahead to reserve one for your use during class.

Materials

All materials are included in this class.

If you prefer to bring your own supplies, you may bring:

• Non-stretch, non-slippery fabric

• Rotary cutter

• Cutting ruler and mat

• Sewing machine in good working order with a fresh needle

• Thread

• Iron and pressing mat

• Fabric scissors

• Hand-sewing needles

• Basic notions (pins, seam ripper, etc.)

This class offers a welcoming, low-pressure environment where beginners can build confidence, learn essential sewing skills, and leave with a beautiful, useful project they made themselves!
