Beginner Quilting



Learn the entire process of making a quilt in this four-week workshop. We will go through the process of piecing, starting with squares. After you have pieced the center, we will go over adding and borders, quilting your quilt, and finally binding the edges to finish this simple half square triangle quilt.

Skill Level: Beginner  

Skill requirements: 

Must have basic understanding of operation of your sewing machine. This class is not intended to go through threading, stitch selection, etc..   

Must be aged 16+ or be accompanied by an adult. 

IN THIS WORKSHOP YOU WILL LEARN: 

Day 1: 

  • Measuring and cutting using rotary cutter, mat, and ruler
  • The importance of an accurate ¼” seam 
  • Piecing the top: 
    • Squares and rectangles 
    • Half Square Triangles 
  • Squaring up blocks 
  • Homework: Finish your blocks and join them together. 

Day 2: 

  • Adding sashing and borders 
  • Basting 
  • Homework: Add borders and baste layers

Day 3: 

  • Doing the actual “quilting” – this means topstitching your layers together 
  • Homework: Finish quilting layers together

Day 4: 

  • Front to back machine binding 
  • How to join your binding so that it lays flawlessly flat 
  • Homework: Finish binding

 

Materials Needed:  

  • Fabric and batting : 
    • 4 Fat Quarters, or 4 fabrics at 0.25m, or equivalent of approximately 1m total of yardage/scraps in a variety of coordinating fabrics for smaller squares (Needed for day 1) 
    • 0.75m background fabric (Lightest colour, day 1) 
    • 0.75m border fabric (Day 2) 
    • 1.5m backing fabric (Day 2) 
    • Batting at least 45x 58” (Day 2) 
    • 0.4m binding fabric (Day 4) 
    • Requirements are for baby size, 40 x 53. If you would like to make a larger quilt, get more of each, but keep in mind a larger quilt will require more homework time. Come see us for requirements for larger quilt. We can help you do the math!
  • Thread: 
    • Neutral colour thread for piecing (usually grey for cool colours, beige for warm colours, day 1) 
    • Coordinating thread for quilting (Day 3) 
    • Coordinating thread for binding (Day 4) 
  • Equipment: 
    • Sewing machine** in good working order with a fresh needle (Day 1) 
    • Rotary cutter, mat and ruler (Day 1)
    • ¼” piecing foot (Day 1) 
    • Walking foot (Day 3) 
  • Notions: 
    • Basting pins (Curved safety pins, Day 2) 
    • Hand sewing needle (Day 4) 
    • Binding clips (I like Wonder Clips, but we can discuss options prior to needing them on day 4) 
    • Other basic sewing notions
